A bit of catch-up. Had this E46 320 SE Tourer And also this Rover 75 Connossieur SE diesel (BMW) with autobox Had been running them both side-by-side all over the chilly seasons and then sold them both same weekend, buying the E39 from the photos alone. Went up to the far North West to get it and can't say I'm disappointed. Drove it 20 miles to work today in fact, fast lane all the way Been running this about as a daily for two months now. It's quite a nice place to sit, everything is working (bar the aircon, pump kicks-in but no chills) and it has the bonus of the 'BMW Business' sounds unit adapted to allow aux-in from iPod etc. Apart from that, it's quite a nice steer and the difference in the way you are treated on the road compared to the Rover is striking... Other cars just seem to see you in the rear-view mirror and get out of the way. No bullying, no prompting. They just submit... It's a funny old world. But why though? You ask. 1) It has Six Cylinders of BMW 2.5 litre power. Single Vanos (variable timing gubbings) on this one, which I'm told proved to be more reliable than the later. It does sound fruity and sings up in the rev range. 2) Just 50 Panama Brown metallic in RHD. Looks nice in the sunshine. A couple of blebs but so what. 3) The interior is in great condition and equally rare. The combo must have been deeply unfashionable in 1996. 3) Oh it's early, really early. This is a spring 1996, when the E39 series was only shown at Cologne in the December. 4) it was cheap, very cheap. Currently getting just over 30mpg on 40 mile commute. Which begs why the Rover diesel could only manage 40.
