Not MOT'd yet but other than that done. Will MOT it shortly when i have some time off work - annoyingly as an MOT tester i can't actually test this one as its a Tricycle and has to go to a specific test station!

That's really come up a treat! It's odd how modern it looks from certain angles, then the mirrors and number plates remind you that it isn't.

Well. Time to bring this up to date..... Good news. It passed its MOT and as of last Thursday is legally back on the road. I took it to a show at the weekend and its brilliant fun to drive, i like it very much. Bad news. On the way home from the show I, err, blew the engine up. I was only doing 55 honest. Big backfire, loss of power, steam out the back. Sadly, this was on a busy A road, and I had my partner with me whos an anxious passenger. Self preservation and finding a safe place to stop took priority over trying to save the engine and by the time i did stop the engine was red hot, and promptly seized as soon as I pulled over. Looks like head gasket failure but ive properly cooked and wrecked it. Engine rebuild required...... So its not finished as yet! Pics when i strip it.

Ouch! But it's a massive positive that you find it fun to drive. A couple of times I've come to the end of restorations and been disappointed to find them less than appealing on the road. It's always been down to teething troubles, anxiety and infamiliarity which have resolved within a few drives after which I've loved them. But I could easily imagine something as radical as a Bug proving a bit of a challenge out in the big world.

Yes, that's what I really should have said
Still, the car looks superb now, so the opportunity is now there to have some fun deciding whatever powerplant and tune you want

Back tracking slightly, any one remember that the deal with the free respray was that i built an engine for the chap who painted it? Here it is: 595cc Fiat 500

I stuck the Bug away for a few days, it had annoyed me.... Going forward, the cheap option would be yet another used engine - but i dont feel like trusting one. So that leaves me with the rebuild option. Many parts, "organised" on the floor. Bare block, liners pushed out, and steam cleaned inside and out. Lovely, freshly skimmed head. Awaiting parts, then i shall start to reassemble!

The gruesome remains..... The two on the right had to hammered out of the bores.
