US GM car (Buick I think) Yes, Portholes on the wing (fender!) are a Buick signature The Buick term is 'Ventiports' and the story is a good one: In 1948, a Buick styling employee cut a set of holes in the fenders of a Roadmaster convertible and fitted them with lights hooked up to the distributor; they glowed amber when a cylinder fired, like the fire-spitting exhaust of a fighter plane. The Buick director liked the look so much, he ordered the holes added to the 1949 Roadmasters as a last minute change for production. The portholes, branded 'Cruiser-Line Ventiports' by GM’s marketing, didn’t come with the amber lights, but they did act as heat extractors. From 1950 they no longer functioned as vents, after owners complained kids were stuffing things in them! |
