You may have distant memories of a copper Matiz, then a blue one, then a green one from the old forum. The green one is still with us. The sills were done last year and it duly trundled off with son #3 to Birmingham university. A month back, he broke it. Engine mount collapsed, near side drive shaft broken. The nice AA man towed it to a local garage which does "Discounts for students and nurses". They quoted him £700 to fix it.... To his eternal credit, the Yorkshire side came through and he went "'Ow much? I'll phone me Dad!" Good lad.
So, it came back to the wilds of LBA on a Shiply return run. The engine mounting had rotted through the metal casing, so that was an hours metal bashing and welding. Picked up a second hand drive shaft ("With a warranty") and shot that in. Took it round the block and the CV joint made a horrible noise. Take suspension apart for the second time. Take tripod bearing off new drive shaft and fit to original one. Couple of new boots, lots of grease and off we go again. I can now hear front wheel bearing. Take suspension apart for the third time. Speak severely to son #3 about at least telling me that the car is making funny noises. Do bearing, build it all up again and go for a spin. Rear near wheel bearing sounds like a duff washing machine on spin. Get bearing set from local motor factors, who are starting to find this funny. Do bearing. Go for drive. Other rear wheel bearing making less of a noise. Get another bearing set, to merry guffaws from behind the counter in Economy Spares.
Anyway near silence has now returned. No. #3 son has been punished by skipping the car out, returning all the faded grey trim back to black and helping to push the dent out of the rear passenger door. "What dent?" he said. How could he not see it? The entire bottom half of the door was stoved in. Grrr. Kids.
Anyway, the Yorkshirs bit. Without the transpost costs, it's back on the road for about £90. Not bad for three wheel bearings and a drive shaft. And, perhaps our Alex has learnt something.
