After spending 13 weeks in the workshop, the Octavia was released to me last Thursday. The problem was that the NEW camshaft sensor was faulty. The garage were amazing, stuck to their original estimate and didn't charge for the new parts that had been fitted unnecessarily in an attempt to fix it. They are now seeking compensation from VW for the many hours of unnecessary work caused by being supplied a faulty new part. Good grief. At least its sorted now.

Its still working fine, 3 1/2 years in, still used every day. New timing belt and waterpump just done. Easily the best £625 i ever spent buying a car.

Looks like 'quality will out' especially where Skoda's are concerned...or at least the VW Skoda. I have recently outed the Jeep Cherokee XJ and purchased a second hand 1.6 Skoda Fabia3 estate. Quite a bit 'the small relation' to your Octavia but I hope that she is as reliable as yours...At the moment it's smiles all around. I have heard the 'Bullet proof' appraisal over Skoda cars but 'they' said that about my Jeep Cherokee when I got it...and that thing turned out to be the car from Hell...he..he All the best Matt and long may she be a great car and not like the Jeep, a grate car.

I looked at a fairly new Octavia estate and Boy, thats one hell of a motor. Nice lines and decent interior but WOW! aren't they long. I thought my Vogue estate was long, and it is, but the Skoda is about the same length or so it seems. If the Singer gets too much for me and she has to go then it's Skoda all the way. Any follow-ups on your car Matt of the Vivas? Negatives? and Why are you called 'of the Vivas'? I had an old HB years ago and always preferred it to the Escort. I also owned a HA van back in the day which had tremendous pre-ignition BANGS!! more like Tall boy Explosions waked a few missogs up.

'Tallboy' Rob, now your showing your age ... Another Barnes Wallis special. Am I right in thinking that you had to rev the engine up and cut the ignition...then turn it on quickly again to get the motor to back fire? I use to hear it done years ago on vehicles and yup! it was loud...very loud. I had it once when I got the timing wrong on a V4 Saab and she blew through the carb but not sure if it blew back through the exhaust like I think yours did.

Its still going. 5 1/2 years and 60,000 miles out of a £600 car. Literally nothing to report. I used to have Vivas, notably a 1600 OHC HC which is very rare now.

I bet the 1600 OHC went like a bat out of hell back in the day...Like Rob, I preffered Viva's to Escorts and I think that they were a very under estimated car. Way back Vauxhalls had a terrible rep for tin worm but after spending millions on rust proofing (millions was a lot of dosh back then) they turned out just as good as the competitors...some would argue better. I think that Skoda have flair and seem an honest motor but I don't know if VW fiddled their emmissions figures the same as the Golf. Keep enjoying her Matt...nice to hear from you and Harvey...keep well chaps!

Just looked up the HC on Wiki and got to say that it looks nice motor. Never even heard of them & wonder if they sold many. Might consider getting one if they about. I like the of 11ovegraces saab as well and spoke to a guy who had one for sale but they seem specialized even driving the thing it has off set pedals. The one Im talking about had a Ford engine though (1972). Sorry 11ovegrace but I think Vauxhall might be the way forward for me that is More conventioal for a novice

Hi 'scottyboy' Go Viva ...nice lines ...I think they got the styling just about right. I am and always will be a 'Saab man' first (he says getting into his Skoda) but my classic is a 2-stroke Saab engined piece of driveing fun. True that it is a 'Drivers car' in that the feel and response is unlike any other marque of vehicle...truly unique. Still, each to their own and I don't think that you can go far wrong in seriously considering a HB or HC motor in reasonable condition. I'm sure that Matt could steer you in the right direction for advice as I have no personal experience with Vauxhalls save for a short period owning a Astra 1600 Starmist and my late father had a Belmont.
