Looks great Can't call it Dog any more! Just the front end at the moment.... Anyway, did the service yesterday. Somewhat disturbing. 6,000 mile air filter - definitely due. Seemes to be running nicely now that the timing is sorted. I struggle with timing, so this was done absolutely "by the book" - tacho set up on the test meter and the strobe light, tweaked exactly to the marks. Car ran like a nail.... Several advances later it was fine. P45.

Just one little job jobbed today. Front box section of bonnet shot with preservative wax, then on with the sound proofing. Probably won't make the slightest difference. Dem tappets will keep on tapping. P45.

What type of sound proofing is that? It looks very neat.

Picked it up in the sale at Wilco Motorsave a couple of years back. It's a fire-retardent self adhesive felt. DSCN4564 by Chris Chantrell, on Flickr Flickr test in view of the ongoing Photobucket disaster. P45.

You're caught in that as well then. Total PR disaster, social media is alight with it all. They will have to rescind, at least giving time for users to recover their files Is this of any help? fixphotobucket.com/

They've made a complete a**e of themselves. Fortunately I'm a subscription member of some years standing. As far as I can tell, the cull has wiped out the "free" users ability to link pictures. Whether or not there will be a second round through the next tier of users, I just don't know. I am worried, as I have extensive threads on several forums detailing various rebuilds. How I would rebuild them, again, I just don't know.
I have always enjoyed reading on RetroRides, and a lot of their build threads have been decimated. Other fora have the same problem.
So, Flickr for the moment, then get MrsP on the case for finding a bit of web domain to call my own and get the pics stashed in there.
Chris.

Having finally got the little green horror out of the garage, I have managed to do a long outstanding job on the Red Dog - the head gasket. It has always had this tiny little dribble down the front of the block at the joint (only when cold) and has needed a small coolant top-up every week. Given that the weep was at the centre front of the engine, my first response was to re-torque the head. I could feel that front centre stud starting to give with the wrench only set at 45ft/lb, so I stopped before I broke anything.
Sunday saw the head off. I was slightly surprised by what I found. Pots 1 - 3 showed the normal carbon deposits in the the combustion chambers and piston tops. Pot 4 was immaculately steam cleaned, so there was a bit more going on than I had thought. Odd really. Bit of smoke briefly on start up, which was no real surprise with an old and cold engine and otherwise ran very nicely. Taking the 2' steel rule across the head show no real warpage (.002" was the worst I could generate, so not worth worrying about), so that was good.
The front centre stud was pretty dodgy, and could be easily rocked about in the mounting hole, so a thread insert was fitted. I've not done this before, so I approached it with some trepidation having read the instructions and watched an official company Youtube video. Piece of cake in the end. This was one of the Oz Recoil kits and worked very well. A stud for the valve rocker gear was also found to have stripped at the top, so that was also replaced.
Head back on, torqued down to 45ft/lb in several stages, valves re-set and everything else bolted back on and she started second turn of the key. Idle had to be re-set and she seems to running as sweet as a nut.

Obviously lavishing time, money, care and attention on your car doesn't instill a sense of loyalty in it at all. As mentioned in the Eden Camp thread, she was naughty on the trip and stopped charging. This turned out to be the dynamo (indeed, a +Ve dynamo at that). Rooting round the garage failed to reveal any more dynamos, bar the power steering one originally fitted to my mate Mark's car. He doesn't need it anymore, as he has uprated to an alternator, two litre engine, hot cam, big valves and fuel injection with ECU control. I doubt he'll miss it. Re-polarised it for positive earth and off we went again. P45.

Re-torqued the head last weekend and re-set all the valve clearances. My chum Ron from the Wolseley Owners Club was poking round it this morning as he didn't think it was right and finished up doing a compression test. 150psi on pot 1, 60psi on 2, 120psi on 3 and 150psi on 4. A squirt of oil into number 2 didn't improve matters, so tomorrow: Off with her head!
Some sort of valve issue I suspect.

Snoopy came over this morning. First task - blitz the garage. I have had an extra garage behind the pub over the road for the best part of twenty years. The new owners wanted it back and gave 48 hours notice, so the contents got dumped in the main garage. Sorting and tidying it all away was one of those mind numbing tasks, so it hadn't happened. Mark and I got it done in a couple of hours. IMG_20171022_114355 by Penguin 45, on Flickr As can be seen, fun was had. Thanks, Mark. We duly pulled the head off to find No. 2 exhaust valve didn't seem to be seated properly. The valve itself turned out to be horribly caked in carbon and there was some sort of wear lip on the valve seat. I've tried to photograph it, but there's not really enough to see. So, dig up spare head and get it cleaned up. IMG_20171022_133709 by Penguin 45, on Flickr Mark's wielding the brass brush. Ady came down for a while and gave us some help getting the studs swapped across, before the head was carefully lowered onto a new gasket and everything was built up again. IMG_20171022_153611 by Penguin 45, on Flickr Set the valve clearances, checked the fluid levels and satisfyingly, she started second turn of the key. Seems to be happy enough and doesn't run on. I'll be doing some proper driving tomorrow, so I'll find out how things go then. Big thanks to Ady and especially Mark for all their efforts today. Great stuff. Chris.

And the back box blowing. Again. Did the rear brake shoes (due) and patched up the the back silencer whilst she was up in the air. I love upside down welding. P45.

Got a few miles on the engine, so head re-torqued this afternoon, valve clearances checked and adjusted. Timing tweaked (Don't start....), handbrake tweaked, fluids checked and all is basically not bad with the world.
