Last April, went to the far side of Bristolshire to fetch an old dowager
-------------------------------------------------------
The roadtrip involved peering at the dashboard of a XK8 while coughing through a bout of manflu. The nice elderly sat-nav seemed to think Hounslow was near Bristol.
What is it? It's a 1992 Daimler 4.0 that's covered 77k. There is a FSH, it's had 3 owners, the MOT runs to 2017. The 'Westminster Blue' is a Daimler-only colour.
Why? Well I've always wanted an XJ6 and as the series cars are heading out of reach, it seemed time is running out for that bargain XJ40. Recent magazine articles suggest the same thought. What with me being awkward and doing things differently, it had to be a Daimler not a Jaguar.
Being 'The Daimler' it has the big six engine and top spec. Also, being late enough for the 'Ford era', it's better built (or so they tell me). It has the Dealer-fitted 'Daimler' RAC badge for added kitsch.
There are veneered chunks of wood all over the place, thick cow, deep-soiled carpeting with daft lambswool overmats (poor lambs). Mustn't forget to mention the PICNIC TABLES.
Cruise, sunroof and aircon, electric seats with arse heaters. AJ6 4.0 engine and the larger of the two ZF boxes with a 'Sport' mode. It drives really nice.
Downsides are a pretty shonky repaint on lower flanks and typical niggles due to doing just 1000 miles in ten years - yet being expected to wake up and waft its driver 140 miles on a busy Sunday afternoon.
Bought sight-unseen with Ebay trigger-finger action - which is the keenest way to buy a shonky old Jag when survivors (91% of these Daimlers have gone) are leaping in value. Possibly.
It's a two-way project with Dave Mytocon of this manor. He wants to wipe it over with a bogbrush and fit a tow bar. I want to get it painted properly and cruise the summer. Either way it will get smartened-up with better wheels and a thorough service. Perhaps the worst that could happen is 'money back' by breaking it after it goes pop, and using the seats as the replacement conservatory furniture (she's not keen, but I'm working on it).
Currently plonked on my drive and insured fully-comp for 66 of the Queens' Pounds. The 'adventure' starts here!
-------------------------------------------------------
Seen the brochure. There were £78k new (at today's money) and the dearest model on the Jaguar books!
It's a shame the built quality is similar to a Fiat in places.
It was cheap, though perhaps not cheap enough in hindsight as the rough paint areas and body dinks are bothering me more now after the initial excitement has worn off.
Cosmetics aside, I knew in advance the MOT history since 2005 was clean with only one recent advise on a small outer sill area. It's clear that one rear arch/sill end was done a long time ago. It is 24 years old so will get it up on the ramp on Saturday and see. XJ40s do rot, so maybe I shouldn't be too sniffy as the A-pillars and bulkhead look fine, the boot is dry as are the toe boards. Mind you if you opt for a 'sunroof' car you're was asking for sill and floor trouble. If it's rougher than first glance then it will get a good waxoil shutz and I'll just polish the life out of the bodywork, drive it and think again.
Did do some research beforehand and it was up in the classifieds for £2500 last year with one lousy photo.
Was listed at a collectors auction last year est. £2200; no photos, no sale.
Went through a car auction a few months ago at £1600.
Ebay ended it at quite a bit less than all that. Onwards and upwards!
Either way the experience *should* be better that that ruddy Renault Avantime as at least it drives properly and hasn't (as yet) self-destructed after a life of limp modes, hopeless braking and unexplained coolant loss.
-------------------------------------------------------
It got a nice set of Alloy wheels fitted. I searched for this set as fitted 1993-94 to the V12 Daimler. Quite costly, but did come from a Jag breaker. with tyres fitted.
Took my little girl to school and the safari park zoo in it on numerous occasions.
You can imagine she enjoyed those picnic tables and both the upper and lower cubbies in the arm rest and so did her friends.
I noticed in the brochure that the upper one got an optional fridge...
-------------------------------------------------------
Oops. MOT out last Friday, same day as the Rover.
Well, I got a year out of it and it remained very much on the road rather than laid up and getting fixed.
It was driven about quite a bit throughout summer and on special occasions. Trip computer showed 32 mpg was achievable.
However, it has developed a new fault every month.
Did advertise it last year but interest was minimal. Perhaps it was too dear.
Mothballed for now.
