Sunday morning saw me beetling off down to Beeston in Leeds to help Stuart sort out his back brakes. This is Ron up in Scotland's old car. It was driven back down south about 9 months ago. Being a slightly older gent, he's not up to crawling around on the floor much these days, so leak hunting has come down to me, as well as the rear brakes. This is Stuart cleaning up the brake drum whilst I dealt with the shoes. It is on a stand - all quite straightforward, really. The other leak is the seals on the access panels on the bottom of the gearbox. We can drain the autobox and take them off for gaskets/sealing, but we're slightly reluctant due to the selector cables. Sounds daft? Might be, 'cos I've never worked on one and neither has Stuart. That's the selector cables; there are two of them. The TOP cable is the "select" cable. The LOWER cable is the "park" cable. The top cable is not connected, but the bottom one is. The car selects gears and drives, but "park" doesn't work. When the selector is moved, both output rods move. Logically, my mind is thinking that the cable connected at the bottom is the SELECT cable and the disconnected upper one one is the PARK cable. Perhaps they are back to front? I really don't know enough about this to make a judgement and the three different WM manuals we have are as clear as mud. Any advice appreciated. P45.

Message Harvey on here. Hes the Autobox guru. id be tempted to swop the cables over and try it, on the basis you can soon swop them back again if it does not work...

Yes, good point Matt. It's one of these annoyimg things - I can see it's wrong, I can see why it's probably wrong, but I don't know enough about it to risk it in case I make it worse!

Disconnect both cables, then get someone to move the lever and watch the rods out of the bulkhead, one should move through all positions except PARK, at which point the other one moves. Make a note of which is which and then move the cables to see which one engages PARK and which one doesn't. Fit the cables to the correct rods coming out of the bulkhead. You have loads of adjustment on the cables, so adjust the gear selector cable first, then the PARK cable. Obviously you don't want the PARK cable set so it can engage when any of the other gears are selected.
I think....

Thanks Harvey. That's sensible and logical.
